Cases,
places & faces...

As the Chairman of TMTA,
Christian Dubé is often called upon to represent the many projects
of the Association. We see him here talking to Chinese language
media about the TMTA mission to China.

Gary Hodgins, president of
Pharmax brings a different perspective to TMTA meetings of
the Market Access Committee. This is because Pharmax manufactures
cleaning and infection control products whereas most other member
companies focus on medical devices. Gary is seen here, posing with 2
graduate students attending a TMTA meeting that focused on
government-supported internships for medical technology SMEs.

"And then, you'll never guess what that bureaucrat said!"
Phil O'Brien, president of Canada Endoscope and head of TMTA's
Market Access Committee shares a light moment with other committee
members.

TMTA co-organize a
business
trip to mainland China with Industry Canada every year. On such occasions, TMTA
chairman, Christian Dube personally meets, greets and networks with
the locals. In this photo, he seen with two surgeons from a hospital
in Shenzhen.

TMTA is a
presence on many medical missions around the world. From left to
right , we see here Jamal Mustafa, Ross Dubé and Gary Hodgins, at a
banquet during the 2009 China Mission.

It is has become
very challenging in today's marketplace to succeed as a medical
technology manufacturer - globalization of trade, rapid convergence
of technologies, new regulatory and quality systems standards,
constantly changing product and drug registration protocols and
cost-recovery fees, and rapidly emerging business technologies.
In response to
member feedback and participation, the TMTA provides programs and
events that promote business development, networking, education,
training and international trade. Thus our strength comes from our
membership.
For medical
technology SMEs, and those enterprises that are seeking to partner
with same, the TMTA is the ideal organization that offers the most
benefit and value.

Dear TMTA
member,
It’s that time again, time to renew your TMTA membership. As in
previous years, your membership in TMTA will allow you to be a
dynamic player in medical technology, in Ontario, in Canada and in
the world.
• TMTA is still the only
association exclusively dedicated to representing the interests of
the Ontario SMEs in the medical technology industry.
• TMTA holds Quarterly meetings
that cover a wide range of industry-specific topics and give you a
chance to participate in round table discussions of issues which
impact you directly.
• As part of our mandate to further trade and promote medical
technology business around the world, TMTA creates venues for
participation in trade-specific annual events such as Medica, the
Arab Show and the China Medical Equipment Fair.
• For the last 6 years, TMTA has actively promoted and participated
directly in trade missions to Hong Kong and mainland China. New
export missions to other parts of the world (such as India, Spain,
Israel, Brazil and the Ukraine) are being considered for 2010 and
beyond.
• As the only Ontario-focused medical information clearing house,
TMTA makes a point of keeping abreast of news, developments and
regulations which impact members organizations. Such information is
posted on our website and channeled to you on an on-going basis.
• TMTA’s RASIG (Regulatory and
Special Interest Group) working sessions provide members with
distinct opportunities to explore regulatory issues and act as
mentors to each other.
• TMTA makes a point of representing and defending the interests of
the medical technology industry through letters, phone calls and
in-person meetings with industry and government stake-holders on
various issues relating to growth, expansion and regulation.
• Still on the topic of advocacy,
TMTA’s Market Access Committee has been especially active in 2009:
we’ve had meetings with the Ontario and Federal governments on
several occasions.
• Finally, let’s not forget
BioSpheres, TMTA’s very own in-house magazine that features stories
about TMTA members, market issues and industry challenges.
Our
membership is not large but it is cohesive, focused and dedicated to
furthering the growth of our industry. If continuing on this
adventure turns you on, I urge you to review the attached listing
for your company and email it back to me with your credit
information so you don’t miss any of the action.
With fond regards,
Christian Dube
Chairman of TMTA
Market Access Committee
meetings
We realize how busy you are running your company. That's one of the
main reasons why meeting for the general membership occur on a
quarterly basis.
However, our Market Access Committee does meet at regular intervals,
sometimes as often as every 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the urgency
of the issues we have to deal with. While such meetings usually take
place over breakfast and are quite informal, a lot of material does
get covered and we get a lot done, especially in the area of
advocacy.
Any member wishing to get more involved with the Association in such
a capacity should get in touch with either our chairman, Christian
Dubé or contact TMTA's Administrative Assistant, Marcel Lafleur at
marcel@tmta.ca
Quarterly meetings and
networking luncheons
TMTA's complete membership is
invited to
meet four times a year at Quarterly meetings which take place in the
GTA, alternately in Markham or Mississauga. While still rather
informal in nature, such meetings are run according to detailed
agenda that feature informative presentations by
expert speakers on important trends in today's medical
technology sector or address critical business issues.
Every Quarterly Meeting is
followed by
a networking luncheon which provides participants with an excellent opportunity to
interact with presenters and speakers, meet fellow members, trade
information, share valuable business experience and even develop business
partnerships...
We make the most of your time and deliver value. To find out more
about the upcoming Quarterly Meeting, go to our
Meetings page.
Special conferences and events
At periodic
intervals, TMTA partners with and supports other organizations to
deliver special conferences, events or seminars of interest to the
industry.
Recent examples include the Convergent Medical
Technologies Conference (November 2005 in King City), the NRC
Biomedical Technology Development Forum (September 2005, in Markham)
and the Cross Border Event (October 2007, in Niagara-on-the-Lake).
Medical exhibitions and
missions
Promotion of global
trade and cooperation is another area for which the TMTA is widely
recognized. Through direct partnerships or in conjunction with other
industry, private and government organizations, the Association
encourages medical technology companies to participate in key
exhibitions, missions and events in overseas markets.
Our style is
to build these trips from the ground up - optimizing the return for
the companies that participate. It is far more productive to travel
with familiar faces, who share much in common, when taking your
company and its products and services onto the world stage.
Recent successes include our China Medical Technology Mission in
2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 and our return to Arab Health 2006 (January 2006 in
Dubai) where participated for the 6th year in a row, leading a
national pavilion with over 25 Canadian companies participating as
exhibitors.
In
the fall of Fall 2006, the Association established of a full-service
remote business office with accommodation facility in Beijing,
China. As featured on our
special promotions page, the Association is once again
partnering with Industry.
In June 2009, 4 TMTA member
companies travelled to Brazil to meet with ABIMO (the Brazilian
association of medical technology industries) and initiate on-going
negotiations between the Brazilian and Canadian industries.
Brazilian manufacturers will be reciprocating with a visit to
Toronto during the summer of 2009. For more on the Brazil project,
go to our
global
page.
